Why is soul surfer rated pg

Back over at the shark attack, they find an ambulance, pull over, switch Bethany to the ambulance. Suspenseful, dramatic music is playing this whole time. Blood is still pouring out, Mom comes, tell her it'll be ok. Bethany's vision. Everything is blurry and swaying, then it goes black. Also, there is a scene where the best friend dreams about the shark and it zooms up to her, it's brief but definitely dramatic.

The friend's dad says "don't worry, it's just a dream. No iffy stuff, as you may expect from a beach film rated for higher ages. No language. No violence except that scene. Adult Written by dshoopman September 22, Soul Surfer!!! This movie is very inspiring. It shows you no matter what you go through you can do whatever you put your mind to. Overall, Bethany Hamilton is just an inspiring human and many people look up to her. I recommend this movie to any one.

It's very appealing and a great movie for kids to see. Parent of a 11 and year-old Written by Sarah R. July 22, Great Movie Great movie!!! Parent Written by marin June 13, Great, be careful though! This movie is wonderful! I think you need to know your kid to watch it though. I definitely think kids between will enjoy it and understand it more, but younger kids can watch it if they're not afraid!

Great acting does mention Christianity and God. Adult Written by SB June 7, The shark attack scene is a little scary, so we told our kids about it in advance. The film has a bit of a low-budget, cheesy vibe, but it's still worth watching. Adult Written by knittyrobin May 31, Fine for young kids if you skip minutes My kids are 8 and My 11 year old's middle school Sunday school is discussing movies this summer and this was the first.

My 11 year old is very sensitive so I previewed the whole shark attack portion of the movie and chose to skip a larger portion of it than others suggested here on Common Sense Media, I skipped from around minute 21 when they are just starting to surf until around minute 27 when they all pull into ambulance bay at the hospital, and just explained verbally what we were missing so they'd know who was where in the scene. During the scene in the hospital and emotional aftermath I provided some narrative and paused a few times to discuss why people were reacting the way they did.

Also, in the scene the night before there is some foreshadowing that worried my kids so I told them the shark attack wasn't until the next scene and to just enjoy the party. My younger child ended up loving the movie and now wants to learn how to surf. There is a nice guy who mildly flirts, nothing concerning.

At the end it shows videos of the real Bethany and that was a great way to have a conversation with my kids about the good she has done with her fame and that "a little bit of good" is generally expected from famous people in our society but that she chose to do a lot more.

We also talked about how IRL she doesn't want to be seen as a disabled surfer or a female surfer, just as a surfer and how labels can put us in boxes made by other people.

My 11 year old has a disability so this conversation was especially poignant for us because we've had to deal with similar boxes. Adult Written by Woo May 13, Very good Use it in schools. Good film with educational value. Adult Written by lstitzel. Anything Bethany Hamilton is for me. This movie just blew me away.

She is an incredible young lady and people need to m ow about it. Terrific Family Movie Inspiring story to watch with the whole family. My Favourite Movie! While most people think this movie is gory and sad, it's actually one of the best movies I've ever seen. Yes, at times it can be scary especially the shark attack scene which might be a bit scary for younger viewers but it has great messages and it can be so empowering!

The only scene that might be frightening is the shark attack. When my eight-year-old was watching it she seemed fine and she normally does not like scary movies. Bethany Hamilton is such a resilient person and trust me, her attitude and behaviour when it comes to being in a horrible situation her arm being bitten off by a shark will rub off on you. Parent of a 4, 7, and 9-year-old Written by Angela L.

Why is Soul Surfer rated PG? Run Time: minutes. This is the dramatized story of her indomitable spirit, her return to the sport she loves and her faith. AnnaSophia Robb plays the blonde Hawaiian who was only thirteen at the time of the incident, but appears to be older in this adaptation.

With a recent win under their belts and a major competition only weeks away, the girls look for every opportunity to practice their sport. One idyllic island day that looked particularly inviting to those who had to trek through a winter snow storm to get to the screening Bethany joins Alana for an early morning outing.

Now she must face the painful process of physical and emotional recovery. Nelson greets his favorite patient with an affectionate kiss on the top of her head. The teenager also belongs to a strong religious community and has a youth leader Carrie Underwood who buoys her up when the reality of her new situation crashes down on her like a rogue wave.

Without being overly preachy, this script emphasizes the strength and perspective Bethany gains from her Christian beliefs. It is something she needs as she learns to do things with one hand and faces the inquisitive stares of reporters and strangers. Strong performances by many cast members and some heartfelt scenes as when Bethany gets her first real look at the stump of her arm help create genuine emotion in this story and a deeper appreciation for the impressive attitude of this young surfer.

As well, the accomplished boarding skills of the young competitors make this film a fun watch. Given the nature of the attack, the film portrayal is not overly graphic, although the ocean water surrounding the young girl fills with blood following the amputation.

Other scenes of blood and a dead shark may disturb some audience members as well.
