When do guide dogs poop
Just a couple days ago I…. What about people who are unable to pick up the poop? I did some research to see if I could find more information on whether or not someone who was unable to pick up after their service dog because of a disability would be required to pick up the poop.
The articles I read say yes that it is still the responsibility of the owner to pick up after their dog. This comes from a conversation I had with Ramona many years ago. She used to work in the puppy department at Guide Dogs of America. Making sure you have an empty dog before walking helps. Early training helps make your dog welcome every where! And a blind person already knows where their dog is, so I thought it was a no-brainer.
Maybe wearing gloves would be a bit more advisable, but yeah, I was intrigued enough to google it for him…. John, I just saw your comment and also came across an interesting article this morning about a Blind Man handed a fine after guide dog fouls. When we raise guide dog puppies, we touch them on their backs to get them used to being touched.
The purpose of this is so that the visually impaired person can tell by the arch of the dogs back whether it is deficating or urinating.
They then use a bag just like everyone else to pick up the poop. The poop is warm, it is fairly easy to find! It is a gradual process, but eventually, the puppy is taught to only go when asked. Note that the image used above is only a guide. When the puppy indicates it needs to go, their red coat is removed and the appropriate command given. The puppy will learn to associate their red coat with this behaviour, and their working harness later on. The end result is that the dog will only go when the handler asks, usually as part of a routine.
When they are out and about the commands can be used either on lead or off lead in a safe and suitable place but never in a coat or harness. Once the puppy has grown up they are matched with a handler, who is also taught the toileting etiquette.
