He does it again when he gives Mrs. Dubose the benefit of the doubt and treats her with respect and kindness even though she has made many mistakes. Lastly we see Atticus do this as he welcomes Walter Cunningham one of the poorest boys in the town of Maycomb inside his house and not once during that time does he judge or treat Walter any different due to his circumstance.

He remains courteous throughout the novel, even when faced with negative behaviour and treats everyone politely. This is different to many Maycomb residents who treat black people with rudeness and contempt.

Atticus makes sure he defends Tom Robinson with compassion and integrity. He speaks courageously on his behalf, making sure everyone at the trial is aware that Tom is innocent, even if this means he is putting himself in a difficult position among his neighbours, some of whom might turn against him due to his unprejudiced beliefs.

He is also pointing out that it is wrong for people to now feel more anger towards Tom simply because he admitted to feeling sorry for a white woman; something many people living in Maycomb cannot tolerate. They feel black people are so uncivilized that they are in no position to feel sorry for anyone who is white. Atticus is tolerant of people and he always tries to understand why people behave in the way they do. He is not judgmental and understands there are many reasons why people might say or do something, even if he does not agree with it.

You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view In other words, you need to walk around in their skin, pretend to be them and try to live life as they do in order to understand how they feel.

Atticus believes that all men have been created equal. He sees no difference between black and white people and does not judge people on the colour of their skin. Instead, he treats each person as an individual and does not judge them based on colour or class. Miss Atkinson and Aunt Alexandra are also part. The Ku Klux Klan was established. Because the defendant is on the bottom of the social structure, evil is just assumed.

Atticus recognizes this great handicap and uses it to his advantage in his overall point, the the social conscience in human. Atticus believes everyone should be treated equal. No matter who Atticus puts in danger he treats everyone fairly. Atticus shows his children how to respect people and treat them right no matter what the other person does or says to them. Atticus symbolizes equality and justice not only in the courtroom but outside of the courtroom.

Tom is defended by Atticus no matter the trouble or cost Atticus has to take, whether it be putting his children or himself in trouble. Another definition is the upholding what is just, especially fair treatment. Atticus is justice. Atticus Finch does uphold what is just and it is especially fair treatment. Even though in those times everyone looked down on a black person but Atticus treated them like they were one of them.

Atticus showed that Tom was just another person and that the color of his skin didn't matter. He showed fairness when no one else did. I agree with Atticus because I will stand up for what is fair. I try my hardest to be just at home and outside of my home. I relate to Atticus because we have a lot of the same views and the way he treats people and shows that he loves them makes me deeply respect him.
